All of my photography - the raw images, the photoshop files, everything from when I first started in 2007 to the most recent strawberry photo - they're gone.  The external hard drive that held everything was knocked off my desk and broken.  The files are probably retrievable, but I don't have a spare $1,000 sitting around to pay for it.

I'm still not sure how to react.  Five years of photo work, gone in the space of a few seconds.

Stuff is still online here and elsewhere in small, low-res form, which is good.  Little windows of the real thing.

:(

EDIT
I did some digging on my computer hard drive, and I discovered that all of the PSD files - which have the full-res images - were hidden in a dusty little corner.  So all that was lost was the raw images.

While it's still a blow to lose the raw images, it's a HUGE relief to find most of my work still intact.  I've gotten Dropbox and plan on keeping things there for digital safekeeping.

I lost almost all of my photos, at the time I was in a pinch for hardrive space, so I had most of the 'eggs in the same basket' ... 1800€ for the data recovery, the drive is currently at a corner catching dust till I win the lottery or something...

Like yourself, I managed to recover some stuff in a ancient corner of my laptop hardrive, but I would say 95% of everything is lost till I recover that hardrive.

Currently I have 2 mirrored 3TB hardrives for storage. I can't use a cloud storage solution as I have at least 2TB in stuff (and my paycheck is not that great)...

I'm thinking in add a third 3TB drive for random stuff backups as I don't really trust RAID solutions...

Oh... and most data recovery companies simply rip people off... the real cost of data recovery for a standard hardrive is usually (there are exceptions) much, much lower (considering time taken, materials used and expenses needed). Usually for logical data loss (partition corrupted/inaccessible) they charge around 400€, when I've recovered many hardrives data in that state for free.

Lets just hope that it doesn't happen again :/
